Granted, David Beckham has a lot of skills, but it would take some major magic and bending of light rays and the space-time continuum to make him suddenly pop up out of nowhere on the pitch.FIFA 06, also known as FIFA Soccer 06, developed by EA Canada and published by Electronic Arts based on the game of football. The same happened with the kicker at times. For example, a few times, the goalkeeper seemed to completely disappear from the box during penalty kicks, only to reappear suddenly.
In the preview build, strangely, things seemed to run better in some spots than in the final product. However, that's not to say that there aren't visual problems on hand. Instead of trying to give us ridiculously detailed replays at the cost of frame rate - RTWC's recaps looked much more like reels than highlights with their visual stutters - World Cup 06 keeps it modest. Visually, it seems that the ambitions of the last game have been toned down a bit, which is actually a good thing.
#FIFA 06 ROAD TO FIFA WORLD CUP SERIES#
Series veterans might enjoy it, as it's a way of extending the life of a game that, quite bluntly, has a limited shelf life of the few months until a (hopefully) more pure FIFA experience that is closer to current-gen games releases. It's not called a Global Challenge for nothing novice FIFA players will be sent home packing very quickly, as there is only one default difficulty. Bronze medals are handed out for achieving the main goal, but getting silver and higher requires more finesse, with criteria such as the amount of fouls called or an extra goal determining the grade of medal awarded. Or playing as the US and taking on Mexico in a qualifier and having to score two goals on the Mexican team. Reminiscent of other EA Sports titles, Global Challenge Mode puts players into high pressure situations, like being down one point with thirty minutes to go as the English and taking on the fiercely defensive German team. The other mode that will extend the game's life past the World Cup itself are the Global Challenges. Of course, picking Brazil is kind of like picking Liu Kang in Mortal Kombat II: anyone, even with the most minimal of skills, could probably win, but where's the fun and challenge in that? Players go through their assigned brackets and work their way up to the July 9th finale in Berlin's Olympiastadion.īesides that, other modes include Penalty Shootouts, which recreate the nail-biting experience of being face-to-face with a striker and the all-or-nothing feeling of blocking a shot, or being on the other side of the box and having to sink a ball past a guy like Germany's Oliver Kahn, who could stop a cannonball blindfolded. The main mode puts players at the helm of a national team. Since it is a game centered on a special event, don't expect the intense level of depth found in the current-gen FIFA games released last October. It all depends on the player's personal motivation, whether it's to enjoy a fulfilling and long road to Germany and getting their $60 worth, or to get those 250 Gamerscore points for winning the Cup itself. Players will have the option of either playing a long season filled with regional qualifiers to get to the brackets, or they can start off smack dab in the middle of the World Cup itself. It's all about getting to, and winning, the World Cup. The premise, as with other EA specialty soccer games like Euro 2004, is not about franchise management or the day-to-day operations of getting a national team all the way from qualifiers to the World Cup. While World Cup 06 is certainly better than the launch game, it's still got some of that title's issues, mainly in regard to online multiplayer, that keep it from being truly great. Having said that, there was nowhere for EA Canada to go but up with their next FIFA title. With its overdone graphics and laggy Xbox Live experience, it managed to prove that no matter how pretty a package might be, if there's a Chia Pet underneath the wrapping, it's still a mediocre gift. Designed to highlight the dazzle of the Xbox 360 hardware, it instead proved that all that glitters isn't necessarily gilded. Let's face it: FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup was a total rush job.
